I’ve been thinking a lot about Fox News North. In America, Fox News is divisive, corrosive, and wildly influential. Rupert Murdoch’s machine has managed to plow through their ultra-right agenda with little opposition. And while most people love to hate Fox, no one can ignore them.
Margaret Atwood has come out against Fox’s incursion into Canada, but not because of the news channel’s content. She’s more upset about the whole “Harper-is-a-king thing.” Personally I’d like Fox to stay where it is---for me at least---on YouTube clips, being made fun of by Jon Stewart.
But there’s a serious possibility that Fox News North will get approval, one way or another. Harper is more than capable of getting his own man to head the CRTC. Murdoch will make a grand entrance in Toronto and be paraded through a security cordon to shelter him from protests. After that it’s open season.
So I propose the creation of
Citizens for a Fox-Free Canada. You don’t have to do anything. I’ve only just started a facebook page, so settle down. But I reckon there will come a day soon enough when we’ll raise our voices above our pint glasses and proudly say: We are Citizens for a Fox-Free Canada!
